Are Hungarians gullible enough to leave the EU?

Image
Recently Viktor Orbán and his cronies have begun to hint that it would be better for Hungary outside the EU. This is a new development, although they have been attacking "Brussels" for years (including with huge "Stop Brussels" posters, of which the joke party, the Two-Tailed Dog Party made clever parodies, see below). Though some EU politicians would welcome such a change, political analysist claim that an effective Huxit would lead to Orbán's fall, as polls say the majority of Hungarians are in favor of staying in the EU. (Text: "Did you know that Brussels is actually a city?" Source: Two-Tailed Dog Party Facebook gallery) This could be cause for hope, but does not consider the power that FIDESZ propaganda may have over people. The so-called "Pedophilia law", which effectively stigmatizes LGBT+ people, has proved a scary illustration to this point. Though it has not even come into effect yet, it has sparked unprecedented homophobia in the ...

How Hungary made it to the world map

Image
"Hungary is a small country." This was the knowledge we grew up with, the awareness that we would never matter in world politics, that our events would not make the headlines, that foreigners could not even situate the country on the map, let alone know its capital, so in the 1980s Cliff Richard started his Budapest concert by saying "I'm happy to be here in Bucharest." All this in spite of the fact, we complained, that Hungary had once been a strong country, one of the leading kingdoms of Europe, although (this is often forgotten) in most of these periods it had been united with either Poland or Austria. (In the former case, Hungarian history books teach that Poland was part of Hungary, whereas Polish ones say Hungary was part of Poland.) And this made it even harder to bear our present unimportance. So we liked bragging about our glorious past, claiming that the church bells tolling at noon is a celebration of a victorious battle of the Hungarians against the...

The case of the Norway Grants and male entitlement

Image
https://www.euronews.com/2021/07/23/norway-suspends-aid-to-hungary-over-who-should-control-funds-for-ngos   The story in short: the EEA and Norway Grants (financed by Iceland, Lichtenstein and Norway to contribute to a more equal and greener Europe) planned to give 220 million Euro (77 billion HUF) to Hungary. However, instead of leaving it entirely to the Hungarian government who they allocate the money to, with respect to 9.6 million Euro, they wanted to take that decision out of the government's hands. (Mind you, they have good reasons for doing so; in the 2010s, the same government has repeatedly cracked down on NGOs receiving Norwegian grants, labeling them agents and spies, and making increasingly strict administrative and legal requirements they must comply with - clearly a revenge, as the list of recipients included human rights, anti-corruption and LGBTQ organizations. It is also well-known that much of the EU funding given to Hungary lands in the pockets of oligarchs...
