Are Hungarians gullible enough to leave the EU?
Recently Viktor Orbán and his cronies have begun to hint that it would be better for Hungary outside the EU. This is a new development, although they have been attacking "Brussels" for years (including with huge "Stop Brussels" posters, of which the joke party, the Two-Tailed Dog Party made clever parodies, see below). Though some EU politicians would welcome such a change, political analysist claim that an effective Huxit would lead to Orbán's fall, as polls say the majority of Hungarians are in favor of staying in the EU.

This could be cause for hope, but does not consider the power that FIDESZ propaganda may have over people. The so-called "Pedophilia law", which effectively stigmatizes LGBT+ people, has proved a scary illustration to this point. Though it has not even come into effect yet, it has sparked unprecedented homophobia in the country. Whereas earlier, wearing the rainbow symbol did not particularly put one at risk, recently there have been several physical attacks against people who hung the rainbow flag from their window or just wore a rainbow-colored dress. The media has diligently started investigating which schools have invited LGBT+ sensitizing programs in the past and exposing them in sensationalist articles; meanwhile, enthusiastic citizens have been reporting TV shows for including "homosexual content". And, I repeat, this is a law which was passed a couple of months ago and has not even entered into force.
So yes, polls indicate that the majority of Hungarians wish to remain in the EU - but the anti-Brussels campaign is just starting in earnest, polls cannot yet reflect its effect. Also, as any sociologist can tell, polling is never 100% objective. For instance, Amnesty International Hungary and Háttér Society claim, on the basis of a recently conducted poll, that the acceptance of LGBT+ people is higher than ever in Hungary (https://hatter.hu/hirek/tortenelmi-csucson-a-melegek-elfogadottsaga-magyarorszagon). However, it transpires that they ignored those who would not answer the question and do not even indicate the number of such people - though I would guess that the majority of ardent homophobes refuses to even discuss this topic.
In a country where all printed media, all non-online radio stations and all major TV channels (with one exception, owned by a church close to FIDESZ) are in state hands and state propaganda oozes from billboards all over the country, people have little access to alternative discourses. (Oh yes, the internet. There are a couple of oppositional, community-financed news websites, the rest is mainly blogs and stuff in foreign languages, which most Hungarians do not understand.) If the government starts in earnest to propagate exiting the EU, people's opinions (if not necessarily poll results) are likely to change. Just how much is something we have yet to see.
